- ABSTRACT: This study intends to develop anticariogenic orthodontic cement by incorporating Augmentin-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Augmentin was used as a reducing agent as well as a coating material to stabilize the synthesized AgNPs. The prepared AgNPs were characterized using various analytical techniques that confirmed their synthesis. Antibacterial study against S. aureus and E. coli showed the potency of prepared AgNPs. MTT assay was performed to access the AgNPs biocompatibility which was observed to increase with higher loading of the AgNPs. The orthodontic adhesive composite was evaluated for shear bond strength Adhesive remnant index (ARI) and bracket adhesive remnant index (BARI) to optimize the AgNPs loading. The experimental composite with 5 wt.% nanoparticles has shear bond strength close to the ideal shear bond strength. The sustained release of silver nanoparticles renders it to prevent bacterial infection, white lesions, and demineralization of the tooth surface.
