Abstract

ABSTRACT: Lints of Suvin and MCU-5 cotton fibres are used in the present investigation. The wide-angle X-ray data of these two fibres were used to obtain the structural and elastic properties employing various statistical methods. The Linked Atom Least Square method (LALS) is used to refine the structural data and to obtain atomic and molecular structures. The elastic stiffness matrix |Cij| has been obtained utilising Treloar's assumptions. Using the Voigt theory, the elastic constants such as Young's modulus (E), Bulk modulus (K), Shear modulus (G), Poisson's ratio ν, and linear compressibility β have been estimated. The obtained experimental results of elastic constants were compared with the computed results and an acceptable correlation has been observed for both the cotton varieties. ELATE web application tool is used to obtain the spatial images of elastic constants. From these figures, we attempted to explain the anisotropic properties of the fibres.
