- Highlights: Mature urban areas have been confronted with reorganizing their urban design. Typifying the spread of lifestyle activity destinations is valuable. Studies on the purpose-specific compactness of lifestyle activities are undeveloped. The arrival Trip-based indicator of compactness is useful considering compactness. Station spheres can become the central base of a narrower living area. Abstract: Leaders in mature municipalities have been confronted with reorganizing their urban infrastructure and design while considering the compact city and transit-oriented development (TOD) theories. High-density and mixed-use spatial structures are essential for revitalization; accordingly, these indicate the compactness of residential areas and the destinations of people's ordinary lifestyle activities. However, studies on the purpose-specific compactness of lifestyle activities do not exist. Therefore, compactness has only been based on total trip volume. Thus, we propose a compactness indicator based on different lifestyle activity trips rather than the total trip volume to formulate compact objectives that align with the reality of people's lifestyle activities. We focus on the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe conurbation in Japan because it faces growth stagnation and depopulation. We found that the method of typifying the spread of lifestyle activity destinations based on the combination of the Arrival Trip-based Indicator of Compactness and the standard deviation (ATbIC-SD) is valuableHighlights: Mature urban areas have been confronted with reorganizing their urban design. We found that the method of typifying the spread of lifestyle activity destinations based on the combination of the Arrival Trip-based Indicator of Compactness and the standard deviation (ATbIC-SD) is valuable for restructuring the compact structure. Specifically, the method and indicator of typifying the spread of lifestyle activity destinations based on the ATbIC-SD have specific values for restructuring the regional structure in line with TOD. In some municipalities, station spheres become the central base of a narrower living area. … (more)
