- Abstract: Automated open-water channels are used to deliver water for irrigation in an efficient manner. In the distant-downstream control architecture, water is released from upstream storage in response to downstream demand. In some situations, such as when large water off-takes stop suddenly or heavy rain starts, storage capacity in the channel can be insufficient, leading to a sharp water-level rise that might breach the top of the channel walls and flood surrounding areas. In this paper, a switching strategy is presented that, when safety thresholds are exceeded, releases excess flow into downstream pools where storage capacity is available or through escapes out of the channel.
