- Abstract: To obtain the super-efficiently flame retardants containing metal elements for epoxy resin, a novel facile constructing strategy is obtained through in-situ coprecipitation reaction, then the resultant organic zirconium/inorganic phosphorus complex (PTA-Zr@APP) is used alone to flame retard epoxy resin (EP). Notably, the resulted EP merely with 3 wt% PTA-Zr@APP displays the UL-94 V0 level and strong suppression on the heat release and smoke production. Besides excellent catalytic charring of PTA-Zr@APP/EP, more gaseous noncombustible substances, such as aromatic compounds, etc. are generated during combustion comparing with Zr@APP (APP modified by zirconium chloride). Consequently, the excellent synergistic action between catalytic charring and gaseous dilution results in the satisfactory fire safety of EPs. Graphical abstract: Image 1 Highlights: The organic zirconium chemically modified ammonium polyphosphate (PTA-Zr@APP) was prepared. Heat release and smoke production of PTA-Zr@APP/EP were greatly decreased. PTA-Zr@APP enhanced the mechanical performance of EP. PTA-Zr@APP exerted the synergistic catalytic charring and gaseous dilution of EP.
