- Abstract: The ablation characteristics of plain-woven SiC/SiC composites were investigated using an oxy-acetylene flame to reveal the failure process. The results showed that the linear ablation rate decreased linearly with time to 0.035 mm/s at 60 s of ablation. The ablation process of single SiC fibers resulted in the formation of a characteristic SiO2 broken porous tubular structure on the external surface. Due to the characteristics of the warp and weft weave structure of the material, resulting in the formation of "micro-pits" on the surface of the SiC fibers. Graphical Abstract: ga1 Highlights: The liner ablation rate of plain-woven SiC/SiC was 35 µm/s at 60 s of ablation. The SiC fiber ablation fracture showed needle-like structure. The SiO2 was attached to the fiber surface in 'ribbons' and 'skeletons'.
