- Abstract: In this study, the evolution of Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) serrations was observed in 6061-O aluminum alloy under ultra-low-frequency vibration (ULFV)-assisted tension. To characterize the PLC phenomenon, the distribution of stress fluctuations in the time domain and the propagation of strain-localized bands in the space domain were recorded. The order of the transition between type A + B and type B serrations was reversed after applying 5 Hz ULFV with different amplitudes. When ULFV with amplitudes of 0.02 mm and 0.05 mm was applied, the critical nucleation time of PLC bands was delayed. However, the critical nucleation time was earlier when the amplitude reached 0.07 mm. The ULFV with an appropriate vibration mode can effectively restrain the PLC effect and modify its behavior.
