- Highlights: A theoretical method for predicting the gap parameter in tunnelling was developed. Sagaseta's solution was considered with proper boundary condition in this method. The factor dL in the formation of the gap parameter was discussed and determined. The method was verified compared with numerical simulation and field measurements. The theoretical method improves the prediction of the gap parameter. Abstract: The gap parameter is a simple but important index used widely for predicting ground movement induced by tunnelling. The existing method for estimating u *3D, a gap parameter component induced by 3D deformation at tunnel face, tends to show several limitations owing to some oversimplified assumptions. To improve the prediction accuracy of u *3D, a new analytical method has been established in this study. Based on Sagaseta's solution and a more reasonable model for characterizing 3D deformation at the face of shield tunnel in soft clay, the analytical method for predicting u *3D is developed accompanied by an improved simplification process. After comparing with both numerical simulation and field measurement, the analytical method was verified to be practically applicable.
