- Abstract: A static three-chamber Zn-polyiodide redox battery comprising three compartments separated by the anion exchange membrane (AEM) and cation exchange membrane (CEM) is designed to decouple the interactions between the anions and cations. The three-chamber Zn-polyiodide battery shows high cycling stability and restrains self-discharging due to separate between the redox ions to suppress the formation of Zn dendrites on the electrode. The multielectrolyte system can enhance Coulombic efficiency (95 %) and power density (5 mW cm −2 ) because the complex interactions between zinc and iodide ions are avoided. The three-chamber battery assembled in the Swagelok-type vessel is demonstrated to operate continuously for >800 cycles at a current density 45 mA·cm −2 for a power density 33 mW·cm −2 . The results reveal that the novel static three-chamber Zn-polyiodide redox battery has large potential in energy storage applications. Highlights: A static three-chamber zinc-iodine redox battery is constructed. The three-chamber zinc-iodine redox batteries exhibit high cycling stability. The three-chamber zinc-iodine redox batteries restrain self-discharging. New battery structure can decouple the interactions between zinc and iodide ions.
