- Abstract: The world's energy demand has risen in recent decades. Alternative energy sources are needed to meet this need. Solar energy is the most beneficial power source because it is pollutant and fuel-free. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) method is needed to harvest the maximum power from the Photo Voltaic (PV) panel for the given temperature and solar irradiance. For maximal power extraction, a Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is proposed in this work. The power harvested from the PV source is used to charge a battery using a Series Compensated Buck-Boost converter (SCBBC). The performance of the designed system has been evaluated using dynamic simulations in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and then validated using an experimental prototype. The results show that the proposed SCBBC improves power conversion efficiency and it requires a lower-rated design than the total estimated power transaction.
