Abstract

Abstract : This study reviewed the research published between 2010 and 2020 on application and usage of prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics on stool output, mortality, and recovery in critically ill patients. A total of 15 articles were retrieved and 11 were identified for review. Among studies addressing stool output, 4 of 7 reported improved outcomes. No statistically significant effect of the intervention was seen in 5 studies addressing mortality. Concerning elements of recovery, positive evidence was seen in the areas of return to gut function, time on mechanical ventilation, time to ventilator weaning, and length of stay in intensive care unit and/or hospital.
