- Abstract: This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations on the thermal performance of composite slabs comprised of closed profiled steel decking and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). Full-scale fire tests were performed on four RAC composite slabs to obtain the temperature distribution exposed to standard fire (ISO 834) for a duration of 90 min. Results indicated that the temperatures within composite slabs generally declined with the increasing coarse recycled aggregate (CRA) content. Due to the shielding effect of the concrete, the temperature of the decking rib was much lower than that at the decking soffit. Finite element (FE) modelling was then conducted and parametric investigation was carried out to analyze the influences of the CRA content, the moisture content and the rib height on the temperature distributions of the composite slabs. Finally, simplified formulas were developed to predict the cross-section temperature in RAC composite slabs, which yielded good agreements with the test and modelling results.
