- Abstract: An novel ultrasonic vibration setup has been designed and fabricated to perform a comparative analysis of conventional frictions stir welding as well as of ultrasonic vibration assisted linear friction stir welding of 6061 Al and AZ31B Mg alloys. Effects of ultrasonic vibrations on different sets of rotational as well as translation speeds are studied. From the experimental results, it is evident that the ultrasonic vibrations help in producing additional turbulence in the stirred zone of the weldment which causes intense plastic deformation. A considerable reduction in the magnitude of the axial force, as well as tool torque, is evident in case of ultrasonic vibrations assisted linear friction stir welding. Tensile results depict that the ultrasonic vibrations help to reduce the defects in the weld nugget zone and hence improves the strength than that of conventional friction stir welding.
