- Abstract : Although electrodes based on transition metal layered double hydroxides (LDH) with cationic-anionic doping had been wide-ranging researched for pseudocapacitive storage, the origin of performance enhancement still remains elusive mainly due to the poor initial conductivity and random dispersion of dopants. Here, we report a controllable partial phosphorization strategy to generate CoP species within the NiAl-LDH on carbon cloth (CC). Experimental research results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electron transfer from CoP to NiAl-LDH through P-O/Co-O bonds could lead to the optimized conductivity and adsorption energy of OH − (ΔGOH − ), which, together with the unique lamellar structure of NiAl-LDH, contributes to the remarkable specific capacitance of 1822.6 F g − 1 at a current density of 1.0 A g − 1 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. The excellent pseudocapacitive performance exceeds almost all the documented LDH-based and individual NiAl-LDH electrode. In addition, the NiAl-LDH/CoP/CC electrode also displays maximum energy density of 182 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 300 W kg −1 and an impressive rate capability with 95.3% capacitance retention after 8000 cycles.
