- Graphical abstract: Highlights: The influence of bottleneck effect on bubble coalescence was focused. Improved turbulence parameters considering bottleneck effect were proposed. A novel bubble coalescence model considering bottleneck effect was developed. The predictions of novel model were in a good agreement with experiments. Model prediction considering bottleneck effect proved the necessity of improvement. Abstract: The bottleneck effect used to characterize the influence of bump between inertial and dissipation subranges has been confirmed by existing experimental data, direct numerical simulation (DNS) and theory. This work focused on the influence of bottleneck effect on bubble coalescence since the classical entire energy spectrum widely used to establish theoretical model failed to capture this effect. The turbulence parameters required by coalescence model were proposed at first to consider the bottleneck effect. A bubble coalescence model was further developed based on these improved turbulence parameters. The prediction results of the improved turbulence parameters and coalescence model considering bottleneck effect presented a good agreement with experimental data and DNS results under different conditions. Moreover, the obvious quantitative difference of coalescence rates predicted by different combinations of turbulence parameters proved the necessity of considering bottleneck effect of entire energy spectrum in bubble coalescence simulation.
