- Abstract: Excess correlation factor, excess free energy of mixing in the binary mixtures of acetone in polar solvents (n-propanol, n-butanol) is evaluated by Winkelmann-Quitzsch (WQ) theory using the experimental findings of relative permittivity and refractive index and those compared with the binary mixture of acetone in non polar solvents (cyclohexane and n-heptane). The variation of excess thermodynamical parameters with mole fraction of acetone depicts a clear picture about the molecular association and orientation of the dipoles in the solution. In the binary mixtures of acetone and non polar solvents the heterogeneous interaction between polar and induced non-polar molecules bears an important role. Hence, the excess free energy and excess molar polarization become maximum at a lower concentration of acetone due to spontaneous polarization. However in the binary mixture of acetone and alcohols the interaction between the similar molecules and as well as the dissimilar molecules contributes a lot towards the evaluation of excess parameters as both are associative liquids. Acetone and n-heptane mixture are used as a solvent in synthetic laboratories to reduce the elimination of waste from chemical processes.
