- Abstract: A growing country needs to satisfy its exponentially growing energy demand consumed by different sectors. Of them, construction sectors consume half of the power supply in any country. In hot and humid regions, the energy requirement for air-conditioning the buildings is more in hot summer days. Hence, it is necessary to construct the energy efficient and green energy buildings to overcome the energy crisis. More researches are going on the modified design in the construction of domestic, agricultural and industrial buildings. Reduction of heat gains into the buildings through the walls, ceilings and roofs plays a vital role among the different passive cooling techniques. The different insulating materials, reflective coating materials, pigments and additives in paints, phase change materials, nanoparticles and thermal energy storing materials are employed to achieve the same. It is not quite easy to envelope certain buildings with energy conserving materials. Hence, a detailed review on the energy conserving materials for the green energy buildings becomes essential. In this paper, the performance parameters, thermal properties, suitability of the material for the specific application is reviewed. This review shows that by using suitable building enveloping materials, the energy demand during peak load conditions can be decreased.
