Abstract

Abstract: One of the agricultural subsectors that has the smallest growth is the horticultural. The horticultural subsector is dominated by vegetables and mainly comes from red chili. North Sumatra is one of the biggest red chili productions in Indonesia, so it has a strategic role. However, the amount of red chili production tends to decrease every year. This study aims to determine various classifications for red chili production areas in North Sumatra Province. The determination of the classification for this area is carried out using secondary data of 23 commodities at the provincial and district levels. This study uses 3 stages of analysis. Stage 1 uses SLQ method to determine the base area. Then, stage 2, DLQ method to determine growth centres. Finally, in stage 3, based on the SLQ and DLQ values, the criteria for district-based areas are determined to be superior, prospective, mainstay, and underdevelop areas. The results showed that 5 districts are the superior areas in the development of red chili in North Sumatra. The districts include Batubara, Dairi, Simalungun, Mandailing Natal and Langkat. This condition means that the red chili in these 5 districts has a comparative advantage now and in the future compared to other agricultural commodities.
