- Graphical abstract: Abstract: The surface or joint properties of thermoplastic polymer materials such as impact, hardness, wear resistance, and core ductility are more significant than the overall material characteristics in several engineering applications. Composite fabrication of polymer-based matrix, which was formerly limited to Aluminum alloy, is now being manufactured as a result of the increased interest in friction stir processing (FSP). The objective of this study is to analyze the influence of tool design and friction stir processing parameters on the morphology, wear, powder dispersion, and mechanical properties of FSPed polymers, using information acquired from the literature. In the current work, the papers that provide sufficient information to estimate it, are considered. The processing settings and parameters used by the authors in each study were reviewed, as well as the key findings. This work concluded that the performance of stationary shoulder tools was superior to that of traditional tools. Heat generation, mixing, and surface quality are significantly influenced by rotational speed and welding speed. In addition, the effect of vibration on surface composite performance also was reviewed.
