- Abstract: Conventional melt-quenching method is utilized in the preparation of Se-rich (Ge20 Se80 )90 Sb10 bulk material. Thin films of (Ge20 Se80 )90 Sb10 glassy system are prepared under 2 × 10 - 5 mbar pressure, with the help of vacuum evaporation technique. UV–VIS spectroscopy has been performed in the wavelength range 400–3300 nm at room temperature (298 K). Various optical parameters – refractive index (n), absorption coefficient ( α ), extinction coefficient (k), Urbach energy, optical band gap, dielectric constants, moments of spectra etc. have been evaluated using Swanepoel's method. The absorption coefficient is approximated to have values of the order 10 4 - 10 5 cm - 1 . A direct bandgap of 2.65 eV is evaluated for the synthesized material. The analysis of the optical properties proves (Ge20 Se80 )90 Sb10 glassy system to be a promising material for the optoelectronic utilizations.
