Abstract

Abstract: Background: Preterm infants are a high-risk population for neurodevelopmental problems, leading to disability and compromised performance in their adult life. For this reason, it is essential to identify and intervene appropriately for any alterations that may occur during their follow-up. Objective: To assess both the Bayley's Scale of Infant and Toddler Development (third edition) and the Griffith Mental Development Scale (second edition, revised) in a unique cohort of 311 "healthy" preterm infants followed and evaluated by corrected age in a Kangaroo Mother Care Program in Bogotá, Colombia. Method: Observational study. Results: It was found that when applying the two scales to the group of preterm infants at the same corrected age, the results were within normal levels. Conclusions: These results demonstrate 1) the feasibility of using either of these two tests to assess the global or area-based developmental level of preterm infants at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of corrected age in Colombia and 2) the importance of using corrected age in the follow-up of these patients. Highlights: Infants' neurodevelopment standardized scales are needed in developing countries. Standardized scales should be used with corrected age in preterm infant follow-up. This study describes Bayley's and Griffiths' scales performance in Colombian preterm infants.
