- Abstract: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) were common ecological anomaly in the offshore area, which has always plagued human production and life. In recent years, photocatalytic technology has become a new algae removal technology for its low cost, good effect and little damage to the environment. Among semiconductor photocatalytic materials, Bismuth (Bi) - based materials had very broad research prospects. In this study, Bi-based materials were taken as the research object. Four common types and various modification methods were listed, and the mechanisms of photocatalytic algae inhibition were introduced. Although Bi-based materials had broad prospects in algae inhibition, there were many deficiencies in environmental safety, practical application and material floatability. This study laid foundation for future research and provided theoretical basis for future work. Graphical Abstract: ga1 Highlights: Methods of photocatalytic modification of Bi-based materials were summarized. The mechanism of photocatalytic algae inhibition was described. The shortcomings of Bi-based materials in algae inhibition were pointed out. The future development direction of photocatalytic algae inhibition was proposed.
