- Graphical abstract: Highlights: Iron aluminide coatings were produced by friction surfacing. Influence of process parameters on coating geometry and microstructure was assessed. Dynamic recrystallization during processing leads to significant grain refinement. Abstract: In the present work, the friction surfacing process was applied to produce iron aluminide (Fe-24.5Al-0.31C) coatings on a low carbon steel substrate under different deposition conditions and the influence of process parameters on coating geometry, microstructure and hardness was analysed. Thermographic data obtained during the tests indicated average deposition temperatures in the range of 862–951 °C, according to consumable rod rotation speed. By the proposed method, it was possible to obtain homogenous coatings with up to 0.75 mm thickness. Additionally, with increasing tool rotation a considerable reduction of grain size relative to the initial as-cast structure was observed.
