- Abstract: Conventional inductive healing asphalt mixtures refer to adding the commercial metals (usually steel wool fibers) with high induction heating capacity to the asphalt mixture, allowing the mixture to generate heat under the alternating magnetic field. On the contrary, waste steel shaving that will pollute the environment is abandoned because of its weak induction heating capacity. However, the extensive use of steel wool fiber will not only cause the high cost, but also can aggravate the gradient healing behavior caused by the uneven magnetic field distribution. To address these above problems, according to the magnetic field distribution, this study proposes adding waste steel shaving into the upper part and adding steel wool fiber into the lower part of the mixture. The induction heating tests and induction healing tests of the new inductive healing asphalt mixture and conventional inductive healing asphalt mixtures were conducted. It was found that conventional inductive healing asphalt mixtures has an apparent temperature gradient and gradient healing behaviors, regardless of mixing alone with waste steel shaving or steel wool fiber. However, the above phenomena of the new inductive healing asphalt mixture have been greatly alleviated, especially when the content of steel wool fibers in the lower part is much higher than the content of waste steel shavings in the upper part. Finally, based on the economic, environmental benefits and healing effects, 8% wasteAbstract: Conventional inductive healing asphalt mixtures refer to adding the commercial metals (usually steel wool fibers) with high induction heating capacity to the asphalt mixture, allowing the mixture to generate heat under the alternating magnetic field. Finally, based on the economic, environmental benefits and healing effects, 8% waste steel shaving in the upper part and 8% steel wool fiber in the lower part were recommended as the optimal scheme. This paper reveals the mechanism of gradient healing behavior of conventional inductive healing asphalt mixtures and designs a sustainable new inductive healing asphalt mixture to solve the gradient healing behavior and cost simultaneously. Highlights: The new inductive healing asphalt mixture was developed to solve its gradient healing behavior. The new inductive healing asphalt mixture is designed by magnetic field distribution. The temperature characteristics and healing behavior of new inductive healing asphalt mixture were investigated. The relationships between heating rate and heating depths of new inductive healing asphalt mixture were developed. The optimal scheme of new inductive healing asphalt mixture was recommended based on economic and environmental benefits. … (more)
