- Abstract: The degradation behavior of SiC-MgAl2 O4 materials contacting with coal gasifying slag was studied via rotary kiln testing at 1500 °C, to assess the viability of this material type as chromia-free alternative for coal gasifier. A combined macroscopical and microstructural investigation on the tested material samples lead to a comprehensive understanding of the corrosion and penetration resistance to coal gasifying slag. SiC was oxidized by slag constitute and MgAl2 O4 dissolved into the bulk slag. SiC-MgAl2 O4 materials exhibited superior slag infiltration resistance and thermal shock resistance compared to Cr2 O3 -Al2 O3 -ZrO2 materials, which might lead to longer lifespans of gasifier lining. Highlights: Chromia-free SiC-MgAl2 O4 materials were prepared for lining coal-water gasifier. SiC-MgAl2 O4 materials showed superior thermal shock and slag infiltration resistance. SiC-MgAl2 O4 composites may have longer lifespan compared to high chromia materials. SiC was oxidized and MgAl2 O4 was dissolved during slag/material interfacial reaction.
