- Abstract: Determining in-place properties of modest and mass sized placements can be elusive, especially for ultra-high performance concretes (UHPC) with low water to cementitious materials ratios and high cementitious materials contents. In this paper, test procedures are introduced that allow users to cast, cure, and test laboratory scale specimens to estimate in-place thermal and mechanical properties of modest sized UHPC placements. A set of recommended curing protocols are given to simulate time-temperature profiles of structures with least dimensions up to 0.5 m using 10.2 by 20.3 cm specimens that can be readily cast, cured, and tested. Several modestly sized UHPC placements, ranging from 1:20 to 1:3 scale of a typical mass concrete element, were used as benchmarks for curing protocol development. The curing protocols developed are intended to replicate stagnant, hot air environments such as interior building columns, but they were also shown to provide an approximate thermal profile for placements exposed to some other environmental conditions.
