- Abstract: Dynamic performance of cement/concrete-based structures has been gaining increasing interest in the construction industry. Many types of reinforcement, i.e., steel rebars, fiber-reinforced polymer, have been introduced to improve the structure's mechanical behavior under dynamic loading. In this paper, the Primitive minimal surface - one type of the triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structure - is employed as reinforcement of cement-based beams. The TPMS-Primitive reinforcement scaffolds and molds are printed with thermoplastic Polylactic Acid (PLA) material, then pouring cementitious mortar to cast the beams. Different thicknesses and a linear functionally graded thickness of the TPMS-Primitive scaffolds are numerically investigated. This design helps address corrosion-associated failures in traditional reinforcement. Three types of beams, one- and two-layer TPMS-Primitive reinforced beams and one non-reinforced beam, are fabricated for impact tests. Experimental and numerical results are quite consistent in terms of the time history of impact forces, energy absorption, and failure patterns. The research outcomes indicate that considerable robustness in load-bearing ability is witnessed in TPMS-Primitive reinforced cementitious beams. Fabrication of this type of reinforcement can be achievable by using advanced additive manufacturing of recycled plastic.
