- Abstract: Bat activity and species richness patterns are often used to assess bat population trends. Understanding how environmental conditions affect bat activity is thus important for bat conservation, but understudied across much of Africa. To address this information gap, we examined the effects of environmental factors (i.e. lunar phase and ambient temperature) on bat activity and species richness in the northern Namib Desert, Namibia. From May 2016 to March 2017, we deployed long‐term acoustic detectors at three locations of varying altitudes to record bat activity and captured bats to confirm species identities once per month. In total, we recorded 5865 passes from six bat families, with Vespertilionidae and Molossidae occurring at all sites. Lunar phase did not significantly affect activity on full moon versus new moon nights. Bat activity generally peaked at all sites in the early evenings independent of lunar phase, suggesting that foraging just after sunset may be adaptive. Ambient temperature had a negative effect on bat activity at all sites and bats were not active when temperatures were >35°C or ≤11°C, but bat activity peaked during the summer months. Despite differences in temperatures across sites, community composition was not related to altitude. Résumé: Les schémas d'activité et de richesse en espèces sont souvent utilisés pour évaluer les tendances des populations de chauves‐souris. Comprendre comment les conditions environnementales affectent l'activité des chauves‐souris est donc important pour la conservation de ces dernières, mais cela reste peu étudié dans une grande partie de l'Afrique. Pour combler ce manque d'information, nous avons examiné les effets des facteurs environnementaux (la phase lunaire et la température ambiante) sur l'activité des chauves‐souris et la richesse en espèces dans le nord du désert du Namib, en Namibie. De mai 2016 à mars 2017, nous avons déployé des détecteurs acoustiques à long terme à trois endroits d'altitudes différentes pour enregistrer l'activité des chauves‐souris, et en capturer certaines pour confirmer leur identité spécifique une fois par mois. Au total, nous avons enregistré 5865 passages de six familles de chauves‐souris, et les Vespertilionidae et les Molossidae étant présents sur tous les sites. La phase lunaire n'a pas affecté de manière significative l'activité des chauves‐souris. L'activité des chauves‐souris a généralement atteint un pic sur tous les sites en début de soirée, indépendamment de la phase lunaire, ce qui suggère que la recherche de nourriture juste après le coucher du soleil peut être adaptative. La température ambiante a eu un effet négatif sur l'activité des chauves‐souris sur tous les sites et les chauves‐souris n'étaient pas actives lorsque les températures étaient >35°C ou ≤11°C, mais l'activité des chauves‐souris a atteint un pic pendant les mois d'été. Malgré les différences de températures entre les sites, la composition de la communauté n'était pas liée à l'altitude. La surveillance à long terme de l'activité des chauves‐souris du désert et de la richesse des espèces est importante non seulement pour combler les grandes lacunes dans les connaissances sur les tendances et les comportements des populations de ces espèces namibiennes et plus généralement sur les chauves‐souris des paysages arides, mais aussi pour informer des efforts locaux de conservation des chauves‐souris dans des conditions environnementales variées. … (more)
