- Abstract : Background: Oxidative stress may have crucial role in the pathogenesis of BD. Thiol groups are important members of the antioxidants. However there is no automatic colorimetric method for measuring the level of plasma/serum dynamic disulfide level. A new automatic, easy and inexpensive method has been identified to determine the homeostasis of dynamic thiol/disulfide by Erel and Neselioglu (1). Thiol/disulfide balance as a marker of oxidative stress in Behçet's disease has never been investigated, our study is the first report in this area. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic thiol disulphide balance in Behçet's disease. Methods: Forty two patients with Behçet disease and 58 age and sex-matched healthy controls were included. Venous blood samples were taken from the patient and control groups into tubes containing EDTA and plasma were separated. Native thiol, total thiol/disulphide levels were studied. Disulphide/native thiol, disulphide/total thiol, native thiol/total thiol ratios were evaluated by using this data. Erel& Neselioglu method, newly defined method of assessing dynamic thiol disulfide balance was used in this study (1). Results: Mean age was 40.5±10.37 years in the BD and 40±10 years in control group. Native thiol (273, 4±37, 1 versus 335, 3±46 p: 0.005) and total thiol (326, 4±38, 21 versus 362, 2±47, 31 p:0.012) levels were significantly lower in the active Behcet's disease group compared to the inactive Behcet's disease group (p-values 0.005 and 0.012). There were significantly negative correlation between the plasma native thiol, total thiol levels and Sedimentation- CRP. Conclusions: Thiol/disulfide homeostasis has not been studied in Behçet's disease, our study is the first report in this area. Thiol/disulfide homeostasis may play an important role in the lighting the pathogenesis of Behcet's disease and be used to assess disease activity and response to treatment. References: Erel O.
