- Highlights: Using paper-based asphalt felt (RPAF) as an asphalt-binder modifier. Optimal parametric conditions for preparing, stirring and blending RPAF determined. Parametric conditions assessed included stirring temperature, rate, and time. Stirring rate was the most sensitive and influential parametric condition. RPAF significantly improved the Penetration Index (PI) of virgin asphalt-binder. Abstract: Utilizing reclaimed paper-based asphalt felt (RPAF) as a modifier does not only improve the engineering properties and performance of the corresponding modified asphalt-binder, but it also provides an alternative method for the environmentally friendly disposal of RPAF waste. However, there are currently no standardized preparatory procedures for the preprocessing and pretreatment of the RPAF additive to ensure a homogeneous blend and optimum performance for the resultant RPAF modified asphalt-binder. The work presented in this paper was directed at determining the optimal parametric criteria for harmonizing/standardizing the preparatory procedures, stirring, and blending conditions for using RPAF additives as an asphalt-binder modifier, namely the stirring temperature, stirring rate, and stirring time. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to assess and quantify the effects of these stirring conditions on the physical properties and storage stability of asphalt-binder modified with different RPAF dosages. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to assess and quantify the effects of these stirring conditions on the physical properties and storage stability of asphalt-binder modified with different RPAF dosages. For the materials evaluated, the Penetration, softening point temperature, and ductility test results indicated that the optimal parametric conditions to optimize the physical properties of the RPAF modified asphalt-binder were as follows: a stirring temperature range of 145 °C to 165 °C at a stirring rate of 5000 r/min to 5500 r/min for at least 30 min stirring time, with 5.0% being the optimum RPAF dosage. Overall, the study beneficially contributes to the literature enrichment through provision of a preliminary reference datum for the optimal parametric conditions of stirring, mixing, and blending RPAF when used as an asphalt-binder modifier. … (more)
