Abstract

Abstract: On the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius, Coralita ( Antigonon leptopus ) is an aggressive invasive vine posing major biodiversity conservation concerns. The generation of distribution maps can address these conservation concerns by helping to elucidate the drivers of invasion. We test the use of support vector machines to map the distribution of Coralita on St. Eustatius at high spatial resolution and use this map to identify potential landscape and geomorphological factors associated with Coralita presence. This latter step was performed by comparing the actual distribution of Coralita patches to a random distribution of patches. To train the support vector machine algorithm, we used three vegetation indices and seven texture metrics derived from a 2014 WorldView‐2 image. The resulting map shows that Coralita covered 3.18% of the island in 2014, corresponding to an area of 64 ha. The mapped distribution was highly accurate, with 93.2% overall accuracy (Coralita class producer's accuracy: 76.4%, user's accuracy: 86.2%). Using this classification map, we found that Coralita is not randomly distributed across the landscape, occurring significantly closer to roads and drainage channels, in areas with higher accumulated moisture, and on flatter slopes. Coralita was found more often than expected in grasslands, disturbed forest, and urban areas but was relatively rare in natural forest. These results highlight the ability of high spatial resolution data from sensors such as WorldView‐2 to produce accurate invasive species, providing valuable information for predicting current and future spread risks and for early detection and removal plans. Abstract : The aim of this study was to obtain a detailed distribution map of the invasive vine A. leptopus, which poses a biodiversity concern on the Caribbean island St. Eustatius. A satellite image of high spatial resolution (2m by 2m) was classified using a Support Vector Machine algorithm. The result suggest that the species currently covers 3.18 % of the island and reveals distinct associations with specific eco‐morphological conditions. Abstract: Koraalklimmer (Antigonon leptopus) is een woekerende uitheemse plantensoort op het Caribische eiland St. Eustatius, waar het een bedreiging vormt voor de lokale biodiversiteit. Gedetailleerd in kaart brengen waar een woekerende plantensoort voorkomt kan helpen bij het beter begrijpen van de oorzaken van het woekerproces. In deze studie is een zeer gedetailleerde verspreidingskaart van Koraalklimmer op St. Eustatius geconstrueerd, gebruik makend van een Support Vector Machine (SVM) algoritme. Vervolgens werd deze verspreiding gerelateerd aan lokale landschaps‐ecologische en –morfologische variabelen. Voor een Worldview‐2 satellietbeeld (met een ruimtelijke resolutie van 2 bij 2 meter) onderscheidde het SVM algoritme pixels waarin Koraalklimmer dominant aanwezig was van overige pixels. Dit onderscheid werd gemaakt op basis van 3 vegetatie‐indices en 7 textuur‐indices. De uiteindelijke kaart liet zien dat 3.18% van het eilandoppervlak, oftewel 64 hectare, was bedekt met de Koraalklimmer ten tijde van de satellietopname (2014). Een test met geobserveerde data in het veld liet zien dat de uiteindelijke kaart 93.4% van deze data correct classificeerde (76.4% van alle pixels geclassifeerd als Koraalklimmer was correct, en 86.2% van alle geobserveerde Koraalklimmer pixels was als zodanig geclassificeerd). De verspreiding van de Koraalklimmer op St. Eustatius suggereert dat de soort goed gedijt in de buurt van wegen en geulen, en op plaatsen met een hoge bodemvochtigheid en die relatief vlak zijn. Tevens was de soort vaker aanwezig in grasland, verstoord bos en in bewoonde gebieden, maar relatief zeldzaam in natuurlijk bos. De resultaten laten zien dat satellietbeelden met een hoge ruimtelijke resolutie gebruikt kunnen worden om gedetailleerde verspreidingskaarten te maken van woekerende uitheemse plantensoorten. Deze kaarten kunnen vervolgens inzicht geven in huidige en toekomstige risico's op verdere verspreiding, maar ook in de mogelijkheden voor tijdige opsporing en verwijdering van deze probleemsoorten.
