- Abstract:
- ABSTRACT: Urban studies is a multidisciplinary field with fuzzy boundaries, poor research funding outcomes and questionable application within practice. This paper quantitatively analyses urban policy and papers submitted to the State of Australian Cities conference to identify the contents and contours of urban scholarship and the degree to which scholarship aligns with priorities expressed in urban policy. The paper identifies five areas that constitute urban studies' 'regime of competence'; transport and land use; environment–society relations; demographic profiling; research methods and; politics, governance and planning process. Throughout, I find a strong focus on space and place and varying degrees of spatial determinism.
