- Abstract: Environmentally friendly and sustainable protective coating materials with improved performance have been in great demand by civil engineering sector. This article presents a review on raw materials, mixture preparation and basic properties of geopolymer-based materials in terms of sealing and protecting surfaces of civil structures as well as restoring their integrity. Geopolymer-based protective coatings (GPCs) prepared from industrial by-products and solid wastes consisting of high-volume aluminosilicate precursors along with alkali-activator solutions are emerging as a cluster of promising materials that can potentially be applied to surface protection of civil infrastructures. GPCs are intensively desirable because of their improved long-term performance, life-cycle sustainability, and environmental compatibility. In the article, present efforts, confronting challenges and prospective issues of GPCs employed as "the first defense" of civil structures and members are highlighted from a perspective of practical applications. Highlights: Geopolymer-based protective coatings (GPCs) are a type of emerging materials. Current raw materials selection of GPCs is relatively arbitrary. Performance-oriented mixture formulation is desirable to GPCs. Workability and setting time can be regulated with specific additives. GPC's setting and mechanical behaviors are related to calcium content and state.
