Abstract

ABSTRACT: The performance of a coal cleaning gravity separator is represented by plotting the partition curve, which is otherwise known as the Tromp curve. From this curve, the two performance parameters estimated are the specifics gravity of separation (SG50 ) and the sharpness of separation (EP ). For a given washing unit, when a family of such curves is plotted against a normalized specific gravity (SG/SG50 ) on to a single graph, a unified curve obtained is known as generalized partition curve, which is considered as the characteristic plot of that washing unit representing overall performance at varied conditions of operation. However, for prediction of the performance of the separator under new conditions, it is necessary to define the generalized partition curve by a suitable mathematical expression, besides using several mathematical correlations for prediction of yield and ash. All this is a tedious task and time consuming too. In the present paper, to simplify this conventional approach, the partition data of the individual experiments have been directly represented by Rosin–Rammler model, and its suitability to predict the yield of clean has been established by comparing with other models for the performance data of 76-mm-diameter dense medium cyclone and a Vorsyl separator.
