- Graphical abstract: Highlights: An applied pressure converts the FOPT into an SOPT and also reduces the hysteresis loss. The Tc of Gd5 Ge2Si2 compound depends strongly on applied pressure. MCE becomes versatile under magneto-structural transition. Both the compounds have critical behaviour close to 3d-Heisenberg Universality. Abstract: We have investigated the consequences of external pressure on the magneto-thermal, critical behavior, and magnetocaloric properties of the polycrystalline alloy G d 5 S i 2 G e 2 and Cu -substitute G d 5 S i 2 G e 1.9 C u 0.1 alloy. The ordering temperature of the parent compound is found to be strongly dependent on the external pressure d T c / d P ≅ + 4.91 K / k b a r whereas insensitive for the Cu -substituted alloy ( d T c / d P ≅ + 0.47 K / k b a r ). Modified Arrott plot (MAP) and Kouvel-Fisher (KF) methods have been used to extract the critical exponents to study the critical behavior. The critical behavior of both the polycrystalline alloys is in a close match with the three dimensional (3D)-Heisenberg class of universalities. In the parent alloy, the critical field for metamagnetic transition increases with the pressure. The pressure-induced coupling has a remarkable effect on the refrigeration capacity (RC) ( 355 J / k g K t o 581 J / k g K ) .
