Abstract

Abstract: The naturally and synthetically obtained 1, 6‐naphthyridine derivatives possess a wide range of pharmacological properties. This factor inspired the medicinal chemists and organic chemists to develop new methods for the synthesis of 1, 6‐naphthyridine derivatives. This review will discuss the synthesis of 1, 6‐naphthyridine and its derivatives from diverse starting materials or key intermediates in a systematic manner with appropriate mechanisms. Abstract : This review describes different methods available for the synthesis of 1, 6‐naphthyridine and its derivatives from a wide range of starting materials. The starting materials are transformed into required 1, 6‐naphthyridines by Skraup synthesis, Friedlander condensation, dehydrogenation, indirect hydrogenolysis, hydrogenolysis, controlled hydrolysis, domino reaction, or etc. This review also describes the advantages and drawbacks of the existing methods, and wherever applicable, the product formation described with the appropriate mechanism.
