- Abstract: Aerodynamic journal bearings (AJBs) are mainly being used to support and guide the high-speed lightly loaded rotors. In the past, the investigators have done substantial efforts across the globe to improve the tribodynamic performances of AJBs from scientific and application perspectives. The information on the outcomes of the investigations on AJBs has been published and available in various global journals/archives. Therefore, a need arises to assess and compile the spread information at one place for ready reference to the researchers and engineers for further carrying the research in this field and accordingly their use. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive literature review of the theoretical and experimental studies conducted on the performance behaviors of aerodynamic journal bearings (AJBs). The summary of the review assessment and suggestions for research explorations in future have also been provided at the end. Highlights: The review paper compiles and discusses most of the articles on aerodynamic journal bearings (AJBs). Theoretical and experimental tribodynamic research on most rigid and compliant bore AJBs have been thoroughly reviewed. The procedures adopted, operating/geometrical parameters, and critical findings of all the articles have been discussed. Towards the end of each sub-sections, critical assessment and scope of future research have been stated.
