- ABSTRACT: A second mode of abnormal hydrodynamic step bearing formed by boundary slippage is proposed. In this bearing, the lubricating film thickness in the inlet zone is lower than that in the outlet zone. This challenges conventional hydrodynamic lubrication theories. For generating the load-carrying capacity of this bearing, the boundary slippage is artificially designed on the whole moving contact surface and on the stationary contact surface in the inlet zone. An analysis is presented for the carried load and friction coefficient of this bearing, based on the contact-fluid interfacial shear strength model.
