- Abstract : Eulytite-type orthophosphates Ba7 Hf(PO4 )6 :Eu 3+ were successfully synthesized by solid state reaction method. The analysis of the X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed that all of the Ba7 Hf(PO4 )6 :Eu 3+ phosphors are single phase. The striking luminescent properties of the obtained Ba7 Hf(PO4 )6 :Eu 3+ samples were investigated and discussed clearly by photoluminescence spectra, photoluminescence excitation spectra, decay curves and temperature dependent emission spectra. The results illustrated that Ba7 Hf(PO4 )6 :Eu 3+ phosphors could be strongly excited by 394 nm radiation and exhibited a quite satisfactory red light peaked at 593 and 613 nm. To gain further insight into the energy transfer mechanism, the spectra depending on Eu 3+ concentration as well as Uitert equation between Eu 3+ ions was calculated and investigated. The results indicated that quadrupole–quadrupole interaction dominated the energy transfer process between Eu 3+ ions. Moreover, the thermal stability of Ba7 Hf(PO4 )6 :Eu 3+ and Y2 O3 :Eu 3+ was comparable and the luminescence mechanism was also discussed by configurational coordinate diagram in detail.
