- Abstract : This editorial describes the interface between electrochemistry and biology, and explains the three modes of bioelectrochemical energy conversion: microbial-based, enzyme-based and photosynthesis-based, each of which operate under similar principles, and brings out the similarities between these modes and traditional electrochemical devices. The editorial then describes the feature articles that are presented in this issue of Interface on the topics of microbial fuel cells, enzymatic fuel cells, and photosynthesis based energy conversion, which cover each of the three main modes of bioelectrochemical energy conversion.
