- ABSTRACT: High-speed imaging of water drop impacts on a polymer surface have been used alongside two-dimensional Lattice Boltzmann simulations to investigate the conditions under which a spreading lamella submerges a small surface ridge. Three basic outcomes have been observed when the lamella comes into contact with the ridge: pinning, wetting and splashing. The effects of Weber number and the dimensionless distance between the impact point and the ridge are investigated, and a phase portrait of the different wetting outcomes is presented. For each of the potential outcomes, a side-by-side comparison of experimental and numerical results can be made. An energy balance approach is used to study the transitions between the different outcomes.
