Abstract

ABSTRACT: This is a report of findings in my recent book project on the emergence of STS in its first two decades (1970–1990), and also a further genealogical explication of my project within the contexts of East Asia and Tapuya . This explication covers several themes of the following: (1) how to go beyond Kuhn's long shadow to better understand the emergence of STS, especially SSK (sociology of scientific knowledge), and its multiple constructions, (2) how to go beyond stereotypes and to appreciate the early inspirations of philosophy, especially of Wittgenstein, on SSK, (3) how to appreciate the influences from, and alliances with, British social anthropologists like Robin Horton and Mary Douglas within historical contexts of post-colonial Africa, (4) to appreciate the effects of alliances between SSK and the history of science on both the emergence of STS and the partial transformation of history of science, and (5) to go beyond an intellectual history of STS by contextualizing this emergence of STS within the Cold War era and relevant social and political conflicts in US and UK, and thereby to question how STS had responded to them. Finally, I explain why this project is important and instructive for the contemporary emergence of STS in twenty-first century East Asia and perhaps also beneficial for the development of STS in Latin America.
