Abstract

Abstract: Pleurospermum angelicoides Benth is an important medicinal herb of the family Apiaceae, roots of the plant are used as condiments in the Uttarakhand region. This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition and in-vitro antioxidant activity of P. angelicoides roots. The essential oil was isolated from the dried roots of P. angelicoides collected from high altitude region of Uttarakhand by the hydro-distillation method and subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The antioxidant activity of the essential oil, hydroalcoholic, and aqueous extract was carried out by using the ABTS method. GC/MS analysis of essential oil identified 24 different chemical constituents including β-ocimene (12.5 %), Z-lingustilide (10.5 %), α-phellandrene (9.6 %) as major compounds. The majority of chemical constituents present in the essential oil of P. angelicoides have not been earlier reported. Antioxidant activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of P. angelicoides exhibited high radical scavenging ability as compared to aqueous extract and essential oil. The essential oil from P. angelicoides roots identified various important compounds that could serve their role in aromatherapy, nutrition, and pharmaceutical industries. The roots of the plant showed potential antioxidant activity and could be used as a nutritional supplement.
