- Abstract: In-situ synchrotron computed tomography (CT) tensile tests were performed on two carbon-glass hybrid composites and the respective carbon fibre reference composite. The same composites were modelled to understand the key mechanisms governing the hybrid effect. The model predicts the development of isolated fibre breaks well but not the clusters, leading to overestimation of the failure strain. It was confirmed that hybrid composites enable a higher fibre break density in their carbon plies relative to the non-hybrid carbon fibre composite. Fibres near a ply interface were more likely to fail than the fibres in the middle, augmenting the hybrid effect.
