- Highlights: Ammonia solution and ozone treatment was used to modify the activated carbon. Modified carbon is characterized by a higher content of oxygen and nitrogen moieties. Double doped carbon was used as the electrode material of supercapacitor. Electrochemical measurements confirmed an enhanced supercapacitor performance. Abstract: This paper discusses the electroactivity of carbon materials doped by heteroatoms. Activated carbons were modified by the reaction with an ammonia solution followed by ozone treatment. Ozone treatment allows the introduction of not only oxygen functionalities but also nitrogen functional groups through the ammoxidation process. The modified and unmodified carbon materials were used as electrode materials of an electrochemical capacitor. To determine the processes occurring at the electrode/electrolyte interface, a broad physicochemical and electrochemical analysis was performed. The electrical characteristic of supercapacitors was measured in two- and three-electrode cells assembled in a Swagelok® system in aqueous electrolytes. The electrochemical properties were examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Graphical abstract: Image, graphical abstract
