- Abstract: Deforestation and habitat fragmentation are known as the chief drivers of biodiversity loss. Less is known about the condition of species and individuals that remain in disturbed habitats. Theory predicts that resources are more limited after compared with before fragment isolation. Thus, we assessed how body condition of individual birds' changes in response to forest fragment isolation. We compared weights of the same individually banded birds caught in mist nets within 5 years before and after fragment isolation and assessed the population‐level changes of three species at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project in the Brazilian Amazon. We predicted that fragment isolation would result in reduced weight for all bird species. Out of the 3466 bird mist net captures before and after isolation in the 1980s and the 2150 birds captured before and after re‐isolation of fragments in the 2010s, only 73 adult individuals from 36 different species were recaptured, suggesting that few individuals stay in fragments. Contrary to predictions, insectivorous species that remained in fragments gained weight (3.43%) after fragment isolation while frugivorous birds maintained a stable weight. While recent studies report long‐term declines in body mass of birds in tropical unfragmented tropical forests, our results provide a novel analysis into how avian body mass responds to habitat fragmentation. RESUMO: O desmatamento e a fragmentação de habitats são conhecidos como os principais impulsionadores da perda de biodiversidade. Pouco se sabe sobre a condição de espécies e indivíduos que permanecem em habitats perturbados. A teoria prevê que os recursos são mais limitados depois do que antes do isolamento do fragmento. Assim, avaliamos como a condição corporal de aves individuais muda em resposta ao isolamento de fragmentos florestais. Comparamos os pesos das mesmas aves individualmente anilhadas capturadas em redes de neblina dentro de 5 anos antes e depois do isolamento do fragmento e avaliamos as mudanças em nível populacional de três espécies no Projeto Dinâmica Biológica de Fragmentos Florestais na Amazônia Brasileira. Previmos que o isolamento do fragmento resultaria em peso reduzido para todas as espécies de aves. Das 3.466 aves capturadas com rede de neblina antes e após o isolamento na década de 1980 e das 2.150 aves capturadas antes e após o reisolamento de fragmentos na década de 2010, apenas 73 indivíduos adultos de 36 espécies diferentes foram recapturados, sugerindo que poucos indivíduos permanecem em fragmentos. Ao contrário das previsões, as espécies insetívoras que permaneceram nos fragmentos ganharam peso (3, 43%) após o isolamento dos fragmentos, enquanto as aves frugívoras mantiveram um peso estável. Embora estudos recentes relatem declínios de longo prazo na massa corporal de aves em florestas tropicais não fragmentadas, nossos resultados fornecem uma nova análise sobre como a massa corporal das aves responde à fragmentação do habitat.
