- Abstract: The replacement of composite drive shaft for conventional metallic drive shaft has many advantages because of high mechanical properties such as light weight, high specific stiffness, high specific strength, less noise. In this paper, the mechanical properties of Carbon Fibre reinforced Polyamide 66(CF/PA66) materials are calculated to check its strength using volume fraction method. Further, analytical approach is carried out to design and optimise the CF/PA66 composite drive shaft to replace the conventional drive shaft of passenger car. From analytical results, it was found that the designed and developed optimised composite drive shaft has 80.5% mass reduction, increase in 13.96% torsional buckling strength, increase in 13.96% shaft stiffness, decrease in 82.93% static deflection and increase in 53.39% critical bending natural frequency.
