- Highlights: Bentonite clay of Rajasthan, India. Structural Characterization, Analysis –useful for hydro mechanical modelling. An effective way of preparing bentonite for industrial applications. Abstract: The present work includes the feasibility of using bentonite material to paper industry, decolourization of oils, manufacturing of catalysts and water purification industries. The mineralogical variations in the commercially available bentonite provides better sealing effect. The total cationic exchange capacity of the bentonite is 66.89 m.eq./100 g. The Al2 O3 :SiO2 ratio of the montmorillonite and bentonite was found to be similar, this represents the presence of montmorillonite in the bentonite. The unique property of bentonite to swell several times of its volume with water and its ability to form thixotropic gels even with small ratio of water had increased the research interest. This study employs X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Particle size analysis to characterize commercially available bentonite clay from different regions of Rajasthan and their physiochemical properties and mineralogical compositions.
