Abstract

Abstract: The investigation of the behavior and the change in the properties of AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel through cyaniding heat treatment process is the main objective of this research. The hardness of the material will be increased by the end of this research project. The maximum temperature used is 650 °C and the samples were separated into 3 batches with the same length of bullet shaped pieces with the overall length of 40 mm and the total width to be 10 mm. The 3 batches were divided into 45 min, 90 min and 120 min at the last. Wear test is conducted and for the reason the pin on the disc apparatus was used. The treated samples are then compared with the initial samples untreated specimen. This clearly shows about the change in hardness, wear resistance and some other mechanical properties. The heat treatment process will enhance these abilities of the material. The changed or improved properties makes AISI 316 material to be able to useful in many more applications.
