Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was twofold. Study 1 was carried out to derive a subset of items from the Turkish version of the Fisher Divorce Adjustment Scale (FDAS) which is a 100-item instrument assessing the level of adjustment after divorce or separation. A total of 262 individuals were participated in Study 1 where statistical analyses including exploratory factor analysis and content coverage procedures were complementarily used to create the short form (FDAS-SF). The psychometric evaluation of the FDAS-SF was the focus of Study 2 including 230 participants. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that a five-factor model provides good fit to data. Additionally, the dimensionality of FDAS was found to be invariant across gender and separation status (divorced vs. separated) groups. Apart from the reliability analyses indicating high consistency, the convergent validity of the FDAS-SF was also confirmed by significant correlations with the relevant psychological structures including satisfaction with life, psychological well-being, depression, anxiety, and stress. Examination of incremental validity showed that the FDAS-SF significantly predicted the levels of satisfaction with life and psychological well-being after controlling for psychological symptomatology. Overall, the FDAS-SF had satisfactory psychometric properties among not only divorced but also separated Turkish women and men.
